NEED RELIABLE STORAGE? HOMEGROWN AND ICY DOCK
What's the best NAS solution for small office home use? Require a NAS with home server capability? Running 'Virtulization Station' makes your Network Attached Storage Windows Server 2012 compatible. Play all your 1080p videos over HDMI, listen to your music via AirPlay®, and control all via remote Bluetooth.
NAS Storage Sharing Media
Even as SOHO users we're still faced with the increasing demand for all our data storage, file sharing and multimedia processing over user friendly applications, and more of us everyday are looking for a NAS system setup with easy file backup coupled with global access.
We recommend Qnap TS-251+ or it's larger relation QNap TS-451+ for sheer versatility, reliability and ease of use. Click the image below for some home use ideas.
Thinking of installing a QNap on your SOHO network? you'll love the simplicity of HDMI connectivity, coupled with the versatility of Kodi or Plex home multimedia. Plex can also be coupled with Chromecast for cable free enjoyment. iTunes Music Server can be 'mixed' with Bose wifi speakers if there's nothing on the other box.
NAS Business Uses
Ask us about Asustor or PowerNas for your SME or home run business, FreeNas can also offer a more bespoke setup. Some of these systems use more Ram Memory than others and you should be looking at 1GB of Memory per TB of storage for your Ram budget.
NAS Notes About IP Addresses
IP addresses on home networks can be complicated, but they needn't be. We generally let the routers DHCP server handle addresses for all your nodes (PC's Laptops, Tablets and Phones) and set static IP's for all other devices. Nodes are generally DHCP IP's 1 - 149, Peripherals: Scanners & Printers Static 150 - 199, and other Routers and Network Attached Storage devices Static IP's of 200 - 254. We can then name them on a network monitor app for easy fault finding and virtualization, should your require it.
NAS Raid Tip
If you're going to set up a raid array on your NAS, don't buy both HDD's (WD Red's) from the same source at the same time. If you do this and treat them identically there's a good change they will fail at the same time, or within hours of each other, not giving you time even to go to the shop a buy a replacement for the first one that failed.
A better idea would be to buy one from say PC World and the other from Amazon, so they have different batch numbers, so when they eventually fail it will be months or years apart.
If I buy a WD My Cloud, Qnap or Synology, can I use the USB drive on the back of the device and just plug it into my TV for say 'plug n play'? Only if the TV is DNLA ready. So for a wired connection from your storage to a TV you may need an HDMI port.
If you can't justify the expense of Network Attached Storage with HDMI just to watch movies, then use a USB thumb drive or plug the USB HDD straight into the back of your TV. Or transfer the movie file to the thumb drive and plug that into your TV, there's no difference in video or sound quality from using a USB like this to using an HDMI cable.
NAS Connections Strength Affects Speed
As you can see from both pictures above and below think about your router placement for maximum signal strength and faster speeds if connecting using WiFi, both to and from your Network Attached Storage (NAS).
NAS Remote Access
Another great a useful utility available on any Network Attached Storage in your home is mobile device compatibility. iOS, Android and Windows apps are all free. Browse, monitor, share and manage anytime anywhere.
NAS Virtualization Station
Run full Windows Server, Linux and UNIX based virtual machines. For home business users how about direct utilization of Linux apps, and private cloud access that can combine storage of all your IoT applications. Thinking of a QNap TS-253?
